3 tips on how to set & achieve your goals

Goals are an important tool in business. Some may think, I have business goals in my head and don’t need to write them down, but it’s actually important to write down goals and commit to them. If you have a team, communicate the goals with your team and think about how you can achieve them. It is important that everyone in the team is working towards the same goals.

Without goals, a business often feels tough and laborious. Not only is progress slow, but you can also lose the fun in your own business.

It is fundamentally important to define goals for your golf coaching business. Here are three reasons why it’s important:

Goals make success measurable

Without defined goals, you cannot measure your business success and would not know where you stand with your business. A simple comparison can be found in golf. If we didn’t know what PAR the golf course has and which holes are a par 5, 2 or 4, then we wouldn’t be able to measure our success when playing golf either.

Goals are guiding

Goals can give you direction in many ways. If you have defined goals and know where you want your business to go, this will help you to make decisions more quickly and efficiently. You can then decide more easily whether an offer, idea or activity will help you achieve your goals.

Goals also help you to work in a focused way. Once you have defined your goals and broken them down into smaller weekly goals or smaller work packages, for example, you know exactly how to prioritize your tasks and which ones you need to work on first. The focus will come naturally.

 

Set SMART Goals

A simple method for setting goals is the SMART method. Let’s take a look at what SMART stands for:

SMART Goals

Sspecific – your goal must be specific and not formulated too generally.

M measurable – Your goal must be measurable – in other words, you must have an exact figure. For example, 20% more customers would be measurable or 500 newsletter subscribers.

Aambitious – Set yourself goals that are ambitious. If you have gained 450 newsletter subscribers in one year, then the goal of reaching 500 newsletter subscribers in one year would not be an ambitious goal.

R realistic – Your ambitious goals should still be realistic. The goal of getting 25,000 newsletter subscribers in a year if you start from scratch could be an unrealistic goal, depending on the size of your target group

Ttime bound – Set an exact date for achieving your goal.

Use the SMART method to define and record your goals. I would recommend that you don’t define too many goals for your golf business. You usually define 1 to 3 big overarching goals for your business per year. However, you can also set yourself 3 or 5 annual goals. One of these goals should be a monetary goal – how much revenue you want to generate this year – and the other goal should be a non-monetary goal – to gain as many customers as possible for your golf lessons.

 

3 tips for defining and achieving goals

Business goals not only give meaning to your actions, but also help you make decisions. If I haven’t defined any goals, I might do a lot of activities without knowing where they will take me and whether they will get me where I want to go. Only if I have a concrete goal do I know whether the activities were successful. By defining my goals, I can determine exactly which measures, projects and activities I need to implement in order to get closer to my goal step by step.

Goals form the foundation for every marketing plan and every marketing activity. After all, we only want to carry out activities that bring us closer to our goal.

 

Tip 1: Set interim goals

My first tip for successfully implementing and achieving goals is to set intermediate goals. Especially if you have set yourself a big overarching goal, it can be helpful to define your interim goals for two reasons.

Firstly, it is better for motivation to achieve defined interim goals. Intermediate goals are achieved more quickly than the big overarching goal. Partial successes keep you motivated. On the other hand, by defining interim goals, you can consider exactly what you need to do to achieve your overarching goal and define smaller work packages.

If you have defined an annual goal, for example, intermediate goals in the form of quarterly or monthly goals are a good idea.

Let’s look at two examples of intermediate goals:

  • Your monetary goal is to make X€ turnover. In order to achieve this goal, you need to create and sell products / offers, for example coaching lessons or golf trips. For example, running a golf trip can be a quarterly target.
  • The non-monetary goal is to attract as many customers as possible to your golf newsletter. An intermediate goal here can be to develop a strategy for your email marketing and set up the newsletter. This can also be a quarterly or monthly goal.

You should also always make sure that intermediate goals are SMART. So not “I would like to organize a golf trip”, but for example: “I am organizing a golf trip to Portugal from 01 September to 14 September for a maximum of 10 players”.

 

Tip 2 plan and implementing activities

Without activities that help you to achieve your goals, your goals will initially remain just goals. Think about suitable activities that will help you achieve your goals and interim goals.So get into action.

 

Tip 3 Analyze goals regularly

Review and analyze your goals regularly so that you know where you stand in terms of achieving them. Without analysis, you will not know whether you have achieved your goals.

You have defined your interim goals and targets and implemented activities. Take time regularly to look at your business goals and see what worked well and what didn’t work well. Where you may have had difficulties and what was particularly easy for you.

Use the knowledge you gained during the analysis to further achieve your goals.

What happens if you don’t achieve your goals? By the way, it’s OK if you don’t achieve 100% of your goals. The important thing is that you analyze your goals and see what might have caused it.

Being self-employed is about constantly developing and learning. In my opinion, business goals have an influence on the success of your golf business.
